ATSSB Soprano Clarinet Recordings Now Available!
It's July, so we all know what that means...it's All-State preparation time! These are the two soprano clarinet excerpts for 2025-2026 (Year E). The technical etude for this year is an excerpt from Rose 24 in the 32 Studies book. It's marked Allegro Moderato (quarter note = 92) and I have always preferred to play this work more on the moderato side of the tempo but feel free to take it at a brisker speed if that sparks joy for you! I chose to skip the breath mark at the end of measure 40 that is marked in the David Hite edition but if you need the breath or prefer it musically, you can slow down and artfully take a breath. You'll then want to resume at the original tempo in measure 41 as it's marked. Always remember that these etudes can be interpreted in many different ways. Happy octave practicing on this one!
Our lyrical etude for this year is an excerpt from Rose 18 from the 40 Studies book. I chose to play this excerpt at around quarter note = 60 but you can always play it a little faster as long as it remains sweet and unhurried, especially in the 32nd note passages.
Stay tuned for recordings of the ATSSB bass clarinet etudes as well as the TMEA etudes once they are released later this month. As always, have fun and happy practicing!
